Game of the Week: “Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones”
Console: Game Boy Advance (It is also available for VBA here)
Walkthrough/Database: Database and Walkthrough
Graphics – 8/10: Well… you can’t expect much from a GBA game, right?
Gameplay – 9/10: Creative way to play a strategy game, with excellent mechanics and all. However, there lacks an UNDO button of some sort, which, if you mess up, will bring DISASTER to your hard work on that specific map.
Story – 9/10: Plot twists, storyline, and other variables are pretty much amazing, except for the fact that they talk to much. You can skip it, but you’ll probably miss valuable imformation. However, I do like the fact that you can play through two different stories (Eirika and Ephraim).
Overall – 8.5/10: I wasn’t surprised when I found problems playing the game (for example, when I have a casualty during a VERY hard map, and I almost beat it, I get very frustrated). In fact, I was amazed. Pretty much, even though this game may not have been the best, it clearly improved the Fire Emblem games afterward.
Well… to try not to spoil, here’s the beginning (see if you like it).
Basically, Eirika is in Renais Castle, when a strange army appears out of nowhere and proceeds to beat down the castle and kill the guards. King Fado of Renais Castle is bewildered when he realizes that the army belongs to none other than the Grado Imperial Army, led by 3 generals (Selena the Fluorspar, Duessel the Obsidian, and Glen the Sunstone). He is confused why the peaceful nation of Grado, led by Emperor Vigarde, would suddenly call upon arms onto surrounding nations. But before he ponders about this, he sends his daughter, Eirika, away with a trusted knight to escape the pandemonium within the castle.
Eirika and the knight (who’s name is Seth) barely make it out with their lives. However, as they cross to Freila, an allied nation for help, they come across a few bandits. Defeating them might pose some challenge, as they were greatly outnumbered. However, they managed to defeat them, and then they successfully cross the border into Freila.
Now, another problem poses. As the two Renais pass a fort in Border Mulan, they find that Grado soldiers have already captured it. Eirika’s friend, Tana (who is the princess of Freila) is held hostage inside by the commander Breguet. This is the first major battle in the whole game.
Fortunately, with the help of Sir Gilliam and Sir Franz, they manage to defeat Breguet and save Tana. However, once they reach Castle Freila, Eirika discovers that her father has indeed died, and that her twin brother, Ephraim (who disappeared before) is fighting in small forces somewhere in Grado. Using just this little piece of information, Eirika sets off to aid her brother in this war.
Rent or buy? Actually, if you have a computer, I would suggest you to just download VBA and download the ROM as well. This is free and it is for Mac. However, if you want to play it in GBA, then a buy would be the best choice. After all, in order to unlock *spoiler* secret characters *spoiler*, you must defeat the game at least once. And there are lots of new things everytime… Remember, there is always the power of buying used games and deleting their save files!!! Costs less!
Anyways,
-Cheers,
