Noodle/Point Hyperinflation and Solutions

by Chris on March 30, 2009

in Forum, Noodlescape

There is currently an unlimited amount of noodles/points that may be produced.
As members post more noodles/points are created to reward users.
If we ever do institute a static sink (downloads) the price will continue rise due to the large amount of noodles/points entering the “economy” and from the rapid growth of the forum.
The only solution to this is to create a dynamic sink which will sink noodles/points at an equal or greater rate than they are being produced at.
We had a similar problem in aWoT v0.1 where analyst Jonathan TanĀ suggested various solutions for sinking gold quickly:

To fix this problem we are going to implent all, one, or a few of the following:
Overall Tax
Weekly Tax
Monthly Tax
Gold Sinks
Misadventures
Raise Prices
Lower Drops

I feel that taxing members to sink points is completely pointless (no pun intended) and defeats the purpose of the point system. It is also unfair to those who post less often. The rest of the solutions are aWoT and/or game specific and won’t work on the forum.
I devised my own list similar to Jonathan’s aWoT solution list of solutions for solving the current crisis on the forum:
A RPG or game that uses forum points as “adventures” or “energy”
Events that sink points. Example: A raffle with a 100 point entry fee and a 500 point prize. If more than 5 people enter then the difference between fees and 500 is the amount of points sinked.
Integration with the maze that sinks points
Charging members to change signatures/points and for medals
The Kingdom of Loathing browser game also experienced a similar problem before due to “Black Sunday” where hackers publicized a hack that allowed members to obtain massive amounts of the in game currency “meat”. The hack was quickly patched but there was still hacked “meat” circulating in the game’s economy. Jick, the KoL’s creator, couldn’t institute taxes or similar solutions as those would punish players who didn’t hack. There was/is no way to distinguish the hacked meat from normally obtained meat. What did Jick do? He instituted the following meat sinks:

Cannon Museum Donations
Mr. Exploiter
Mystery Raffle Ticket
Rebuilding Hagnk’s with Grimacite
Time Juice
‘Villa’ document
Rare item raffles

Those were instituted for solving the Black Sunday problem.
To prevent further inflation (as meat is constantly entering the game from players killing monsters and by other means) Jick instituted the following meat sinks:

Clan Warfare
The Hall of The Legends of The Times of Old
John Wilke’s Booth
Mall Advertising
NPC Stores and guild trainers
The Raffle House
Hobopolis
Money Making Game

The Noodlescape is currently in a very similar situation and this must be fixed immediately! If we don’t take action now the forum will expand and inflation will occur at a faster pace.

I’m calling all members to suggest possible point sinks that will also benefit members. Reply to this thread.
